Spathose is the only American fashion design firm to present at the Cuban Cultural Festival. This honor was granted to Spathose, not only based on their creativity but is also attributed to the medium, palm tree spathe, which they use to create their wearable sculpture. Cuba’s national tree is the Royal Palm. The presentation “ARE WE ALONE” is a retrospective of Spathose creations over the past years. Spathose was also commissioned to create the crown for the pageant winner, Miss Cuban Cultural Fest 2013, designed from palm tree spathe.
Spathose created their new Military Millinery especially for the “ARE WE ALONE” presentation.
Made from over a thousand individual pieces, this outfit, originally called The Lens Dress, was engineered to mimic the bay waters approach to the crowning jewel that would have been the new Lens Pier. Just as the past would have been honored by using the existing Pier substructure to form the new reef, we had invoked the past in the necklace with its inverted pyramid form. This project was conceived as a connection between artistry and technology. Spathose worked with Fri Rider of FreeDimension to cut the spathe using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. The piece on the back of the dress incorporates our logo and was made with a 3D printer. We are all connected to our habitat…to nature…to eachother…in this special place called St Pete.
